Managing business needs a plan. In its absence, then it resembles driving a vehicle with blindfolds and no direction. A strategy functions as a navigational system. It is essential because without it one will never be able to determine whether the destination met is actually the desired target.
1. Leaving behind strategy is like a boat without a sail on the waves.
Running business without planning is just the same as sailing on the ocean without a sail, the waves will blow the boat anywhere they choose at times to the holiday resort, other times to risky rocks.
Example
I decided to start a restaurant, but I did not have a plan. I only understood that I wanted to sell a product and I tried different strategies randomly:
Monday – I sold fried chicken
Tuesday I replaced the classical Myanmar cuisine.
Wednesday - Wednesday I brought Japanese food.
Response- Customers are no longer able to see what exactly my restaurant has to offer and I am not sure what I focused on myself. I had to shut the enterprise within six months.
Like a sailess boat that has been flown by the waves, a business with no strategy would be blown by its competitors and market instead of being purposefully driven.
2. The art of saying No is Strategy.
Avoiding things is often more or more significant in business than deciding what to do.
Example
The approach of Amazon is to become the largest online everything store worldwide.
Strategies of Apple: Apple is working on the development of the premium period of technology products that are ready to purchase at a high price.
In this way, Amazon would not be selling cheap phones, and Apple would not be selling books.
Without a clear directive on the not to do list so much of the resources and time will be wasted doing wrong activities.
3. Three important strategic questions.
In which areas do you excel? Identify your core strength. (Example: your establishment is known to have the fried fish, this is its main asset as well)
So what really does your customer want? (Ex: Customers want fresh fish, not the low prices).
What will be your differentiating approach? (As an example: Competitors buy frozen fish, but in your shop you buy them every morning directly at the market of the local fishermen-guide.)
4. Let us reconsider…
This time I am opening up my restaurant again- but not like before.
I will call it plainly Village Kitchen.
1. Strategic choice- I will use a differentiation strategy.
My position: One will experience real village meals that are made using firewood and traditional flavours.
2. Focus – Freshness.
All of the meat, fish, and vegetables are purchased fresh in the market every morning and procured personally by me.
3. Execution –
A sign at the entrance will include: cooked using freshly available ingredients.
The restaurant layout will replicate a typical country house in that there will be wooden tables and bamboo furniture used.
I will share daily cooking and hospitality stories with patrons through photographs and brief video clips.
Pricing will be determined at 10 percent higher than the competitors.
Outcome - Customers start to go by the word-of-mouth: Village Kitchen – "If you like tasty, traditional village tastes, be sure to stop by. "
5. Bring your strategy to life
A strategy is not just what is in the book but that which needs to be made into action.
Strategy – “Use only fresh meat, fish, and vegetables.”
Action 1 -Every morning I get up at 4 a.m. and buy myself fish, meat, and vegetable sellers.
Action 2 – Display a “Fresh Daily Ingredients” sign at the entrance.
Action 3- How the dishes are prepared: Clarify to the customers the process.
Final Note
A business strategy is your roadmap. Only by following it will your effort, money, and time lead directly to your goal. Without the map, you’ll end up exhausted and lost, never reaching anywhere.
So… for your business, it’s time to design your GPS guide today.
